Bancroft Place Residence
Washington, DC
The layout and quality of the spaces within this 1979 "California Modern" home located in Washington D.C.'s historic Kalorama neighborhood had suffered from various additions and interior alterations. The challenge was to restore the interior to reflect the qualities of openness and light that were originally intended. By removing the walls enclosing the original main stairwell and installing an open metal staircase, Sorg Architects greatly improved the vertical and horizontal circulation. The insertion of a series of interior windows, along with the addition of oversized pivoting doors enhances fluidity of circulation and light throughout the house.
