Egg-Shaped Digesters Facility
Washington, DC Designed for the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority, this new state-of-the-art biosolids treatment process facility will sit on the Anacostia River waterfront across from National Airport. Sorg's challenge was to create a pleasing design for an industrial facility that will be visible from almost anywhere in the city. Composed of eight 100 ft high, sealed egg-shaped digester tanks, the structure is interconnected by elevated walkways and towers at a height of 101 feet above grade. Sorg's elegant detailing of the egg's stainless steel walkway connections reflects design features of the 19th century bridges spanning Washington's rivers in combination with a geometric "closed flower blossom" design for the cladding of the body of the egg. Sorg's design adds a touch of delicacy to this iconic addition to the Washington, DC skyline. Client: District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority |
