For Howard University, located in Washington, DC, Sorg Architects prepared a land use plan, streetscape plan and area masterplan. Encompassing 150 central city blocks around the University, the area plan seeks to channel the expansion and development activities of Howard University into actions that would be directly beneficial in revitalizing the surrounding communities as well as financially beneficial for the university itself. Each part of the masterplan relies on history as a unifying theme. Located in an area rich in culture, historical figures and historical events, the plan takes the threads of the past and reworks them to create a newly revitalized community fabric that celebrates the pioneering, visionary and heroic spirit of its past and, at the same time, creates a solid foundation for the University's future development.
