New Diplomatic Staff Housing
United States Embassy
Bayan, Kuwait Sorg Architect's design for 32 single-family homes and a community center shares one-half of a 40,000 s.m compound with the U.S. Embassy building and Ambassador's Residence. The design balances the needs of the diplomatic families with those of the greater embassy community, while meeting stringent security requirements and responding to the harsh climate. The complex's U-shaped plan around a central green recalls both Jeffersonian and vernacular Middle Eastern architectural archetypes, while strong horizontal lines are reminiscent of the Prairie Style. Overhangs, trellises, sunshades and trees limit exposure and minimize heat gain. Deeply recessed exterior windows and shaded interior courtyards provide respite from the sun. Plantings carefully selected to withstand the climate transform the compound into an oasis for its residents. Cross-hatched cast concrete brickwork references Arabic patterns and augments blast-resistant walls. Client: United States Department of State |
