United States Embassy Compound
Kabul, Afghanistan
The reconstruction of the U.S. Embassy Compound in Kabul, Afghanistan required the design and construction of a fifteen-building campus, including office buildings, a housing complex and support structures, and the creation of basic infrastructure such as self-sufficient electricity provision and water and sewage treatment facilities. Inspired by the colorful geometric patterns found in traditional Islamic textiles, the design concept for the new embassy building uses large expanses of colored glass to reduce the impact of the massive building, making it appear more open and transparent. Sorg Architects' innovative design successfully expressed symbols of U.S. diplomatic principles while respecting local architectural, artistic and cultural themes, despite the strict State Department security and building standards.
