United States Embassy Compound
Surabaya, Indonesia
Designed for the new U.S. Embassy in Surabaya, Indonesia, this elegant building subtly embodies U.S. democratic ideals and indigenous design aesthetic, while satisfying strict State Department security and design requirements. A careful mixture of traditional and modern elements weaves purposefully throughout the design. To mitigate solar heat escalation, slatted window screens were constructed of Paduk, a termite-proof, native hardwood used for centuries in local temple construction. This interplay between glass and wood weaves from the exterior to the interior Gallery, effectively bringing the outside in. A stone floor with a grand glass and stone stairway and bridge leads to the Ambassador's office, providing modernity and warmth to the primary ceremonial space. A testament to its timeless quality, the embassy building concept was inspired by Sorg Architects' research on indigenous temples and other ancient, sacred and representational gathering spaces.
